Older Adults Fitness
Even if you’ve never been active, it’s never too late to reap the many health benefits of regular exercise. Regular cardiovascular exercise, such as brisk walking, bicycling or swimming strengthens the heart and muscles, boosts energy and endurance. It also helps control blood sugar and cholesterol levels and works as a natural mood elevator.Read more
Being sedentary raises the risk for developing such serious health conditions as diabetes and heart disease. Strength exercise, or resistance training, helps preserve muscle tissue and bone health. It’ll help you stay strong, so you can go about your normal daily activities.
Consult with your doctor before starting an exercise program. Ask about precautions specific to your condition and which exercises are beneficial and safe for you. Regular exercise helps manage health conditions and can speed up the recovery process of serious illnesses, including heart attack and strokes.
Even if your weight is in a healthy range, regular exercise is key for maintaining good health and to reduce health risks. Many studies show that physically fit overweight people had significantly lower health risks than thin, sedentary people. An inactive lifestyle raises your risk for developing serious health conditions such as diabetes, and heart disease.
Strength-training is critical for older adults. Adults lose about 10% of muscle mass per decade after the age of 50 which means a significant loss of body strength and a lower resting metabolism. Older adults who undergo a structured strength-training program have shown to regain lost muscle mass, increase their strength, metabolism, bone density and balance and improve their quality of their life.
Depending on your needs and preferences group fitness classes can be great for people who enjoy company or need accountability; others prefer exercising alone.
Exercise will strengthen your heart and muscles, regardless of age. You’ll be able to do more with less effort and won’t tire as easily. Ask your doctor to help you with guidelines for safe and effective exercising.
Muscle strength can be regained and maintained no matter what the age and physical condition of the participant. Supervised strength and fitness training is not a high risk activity.
Research has shown that strength training can alleviate the effects of chronic conditions such as Arthritis, Type 2 Diabetes, Osteoporosis and Heart Disease.
Strength training has also been shown to:
- improve balance and reduce risk of falling
- enhance mental wellbeing
- improve body composition (more muscle, less fat)
- raise self-esteem and self-confidence r
- educe lower back pain
- enhance older people’s ability to undertake activities of daily living and maintain an independent lifestyle
At Symmetry Fitness, clients have access to,
Supervised, progressive strength training sessions.
Assessments for all clients by an accredited trainer and a personalised program.
An accessible and safe environment.

No matter what your level of fitness, all that matters is that you achieve the goals you set out to do. Working at your own pace, we will help you to succeed.
Personal training sessions are incorporated into your exercise program. We recommend at least one to two 45 to 60 minute training sessions per week in conjunction with your own exercise sessions. These sessions can be conducted within a studio environment or outdoors, or a mixture of both. This will depend on your program needs. We can set you your own homework tasks to complete in your own time or you can choose to attend more personal training sessions at your discretion.
We can also provide nutritional advice, and put you in touch with other health professionals such as physiotherapy and chiropractic. Not only that, we work with them to get the best possible outcomes for you.
Personal training sessions are conducted by our experienced trainers and are booked at a time and a place that is convenient to you.
A Personal Trainer is someone who is qualified and experienced in many different facets of health and fitness. They will assess your current level of fitness and devise an exercise program based on your individual health and fitness goals. They will take you through your program and ensure that you stay on track and you’ll learn how to train efficiently and effectively. Our experienced trainers will teach you the correct exercise techniques and training methods and add plenty of variety to your workouts to keep them interesting and fun.
For many people, motivation to exercise begins high in the early weeks of starting a new training regime but can diminish very quickly. Your Personal Trainer will ensure you keep enjoying your sessions by making them fun and challenging. What can you expect to achieve with your training program,
- Lose fat
- Improve cardiovascular fitness
- Increase strength
- Improve flexibility
- Increase muscle size or tone
- Improve balance and co-ordination
- Improve posture
- Increase bone density
- Improve sports specific training
- Improve general health and wellbeing
Most people train harder and more effectively with a trainer by their side, helping them to reach their goals faster. It comes down to how much exercise experience you have and how motivated you are. Most people tend to train with a Personal Trainer one or two times per week for 30 minute to 60 minute sessions.
What to expect when you start training.
When you arrive for your initial session with your Personal Trainer you will fill out a pre-exercise questionnaire. It is important to let us know of any injuries or health issues you have currently or in the past. We will then discuss your health and fitness goals so an effective, individualised exercise program can be devised.
The first session could also incorporate a functional assessment of you to ensure there is no injury issues or body imbalances that may injure you or stop your training program. The main objective of this session is for us to assess how you move and your current level of fitness.
What should I bring and wear?
You should wear loose, light workout gear. A t-shirt or singlet, shorts and a good pair of gym shoes. A drink bottle and towel are also essential while training.
How can a Personal Trainer help me?
One of the main benefits of Personal Training is the ongoing motivation you will receive from your Trainer. It is much harder to skip your workout when you know there is someone at the gym waiting for you! Your trainer also has the knowledge and experience to prescribe the correct exercises for your goals and fitness level and to ensure that you are performing them with perfect technique. Show less
